dineLA Restaurant Week

January 30, 2009

“hot n’ cold”

Yep I love food.  I wake up thinking about what to eat.  Before I’m done with my current meal – I’m thinking about the next one.  There’s pretty much nothing I will restrict myself from eating, although I do have a few food phobias ( see tagged again! blog post).  I just usually eat in moderation.  But, I also just usually eat out.  I would consider myself a decent cook, but I just have no time.  I’m a perfectionist so when I do anything, including cooking a meal, it has to be absolutely perfect, which results in being very time consuming.  So I gotta look up the recipe, go buy ingredients and the worst part for me is cleaning up.  I think I’m on Food Network so I’ll end up using every bowl and spoon in my kitchen and next thing you know the sink is full of dishes.  Also I’m entirely prone to spills and accidents.  Somehow food always ends up on the floor, all over the stove or on my shirt in the process.  It’s very much an event when I cook.  So I resort to eating out – anywhere and everywhere.  I have my local favorites, guilty pleasures and as much as I can (or afford to), I love to find those hole-n-the-walls and also try those new-to-scene-highly acclaimed-maybe overpriced joints.  I would consider myself a FOODIE and won’t pass up an opportunity for good food.

So this week my friends and I decided to participate in dineLA Restaurant Week where a few of LA’s notable eateries offer pre-fixed menus at reasonable prices for a limited time.  Our choice?  Gordon Ramsay at The London in West Hollywood.  For those of you who don’t know, Gordon Ramsay is Mr. Hell of “Hell’s Kitchen”.  I’ve watched the show a few times, but it was a lil’ too intense for me.  I felt bad for all the people he yelled at and I didn’t like how sweaty the cooks looked in the kitchen.  I know, I’m weird.  Nevertheless, Mr. Ramsay’s restaurants are considered top notched around the world so we were anxious to see what all the hoopla was about.  Plus we heard that the interior was divine, which is always an added bonus for me.  Here’s a photo of the gorgeous decor from the restaurant’s website:

So last night we managed to get reservations for our party of 10 – at 9:30pm!  I was starving by that time.   I apologize for the not-as-great quality of photos.  I didn’t want to bust out my huge SLR at such a fine establishment.  People might think I’m paparazzi!

Here are the “single” ladies =).  I’m not so sure why we lined up all of the vertically challenged people on one side.

For the dineLA Restaurant Week menu, we each chose 1 appetizer, 1 entree and 1 dessert (my favorite part of course). There were 3 choices for each and wasn’t so adventurous last night and stayed away from the menu items that included rabbit or ox cheek.  Some of my friends said both were delicious.

Prior to our first course, we had what they called “Steamed Bamboo and Shiitake Mushroom Chawanmushi amuse”.  It was yummy and actually reminded me of a Vietnamese dish, probably because of the bamboo.  Plus it came in this cute lil’ cup.  Presentation is a plus!

My first course choice was “Wild Mushroom Veloute – with sauteed mushrooms and chive cream”.  It was very creamy and rich and I thoroughly enjoyed it – especially the mushrooms.  I think I became a lil’ full after this dish.

My main course was “Jerusalem Artichoke Risotto – with artichoke chips, black truffle and sherry caramel reduction”. I love risotto, but I actually thought this ok.  (Please don’t yell at me Mr. Ramsay!).  My friends had the “Ox Cheek” which they said was very tender.  On a side note, I’m not sure which “cheek” of the Ox it was, if you know what I mean…

Next comes the intermizzo, which is between your entree and dessert to clean your pallette.  I know – you learn something new everyday don’t you? =)  It was a sorbet thingy and was quite refreshing.  Sorry I don’t remember the fancy name for it.

Finally, my “Chocolate Savarin – with malted milk emulsion, salted caramel ice cream and caramel powder”. Y-U-M-M-Y.

All in all, I thought the food was good, but nothing spectacular, especially for the $$$$.  Maybe my palette is just not refined enough yet.  I must say the service and ambiance were great, but I probably would not choose to return here and rather satisfy my cravings elsewhere.

And there you have the most exciting part of my week…hahah…well except for the launch of www.kimlephotography.com!!! =)

There’s still a week left for dineLA Restaurant Week so check out the website and go indulge your inner foodie!!! =) Have a great weekend!!! By the way, I already have my weekend meals planned out – Mom’s PHO tomorrow and Superbowl junk food on Sunday!!!

“love story”

Can’t wait for this movie!!!  It’s never happened to me, but it would be interesting to see from another perspective.  Hahah…just kidding…I think we’ve all been there, which makes the movie all that more enjoyable to watch (hopefully).  I am in need of a good romantic comedy – hope this lives up to expectations.  If not, I’ll just admire Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper throughout the film.

In the meantime, check out my new website by clicking HERE! Yes, I know a shameless plug =).

Year of Ox

Just wanted to wish everyone a HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR!!!  Today marks the beginning of Year of the Ox.  The Chinese Zodiac is said to follow the stations of Jupiter’s orbit around the sun, which is just shy of 12 years. The animals mark years in a 12-year cycle that begins with rat, followed by ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and boar.  The animal you are depends on your birth year.  I am a monkey and very proud of it :) .  So depending on what animal you are – the Year of the Ox may be different for you.  According to the Chinese horoscopes, here’s what this year will bring for us monkeys :) :

“This is going to be a wonderful year for you. As you are already in a better position compared to others, this will be a good time to make your dreams come true. Not only will your plans materialize, but you will also enjoy greater popularity. People will give you the support that you need and even strangers will be friendly towards you. Although in general you will be in a good position for great advancements, you will need to be aware of your own behavior and how others might react to you. You should always remain humble and modest. Be careful of health issues that might strike without warning. You should roll up your sleeves and get ready to reap the best out of this year.”

Reading that, I am very, very excited for this year!!!  The horoscope definitely goes hand-in-hand with this year’s plans for kim le photography. On that note, please check back later today for a big announcement from KLP!!!!

kim le’s korner #10

January 22, 2009

“circus”

Here’s the first kim le’ korner of 2009!!! Woohoo!!! I know you have been missing my randomness! =)

  • The Bachelor this season is soooo goood. So much drama already! Can you believe it has been on for 13 seasons?! I must be getting old-er =). What’s the success rate – like 0/12 so far?! Oh well it’s still must-see-TV for me! =)
  • I was loving the warm Socal weather in January. Why can’t it be like that 365 days a year instead of 300? =P I know the East Coast peeps are hating me right now =).
  • My favorite new song is “Halo” by Beyonce. How lucky is she to have sung the first dance song for our new president.
  • I saw the movie “ Slumdog Millionaire” a few weeks ago and it is amazing!!! You have to see it! Probably the best movie of the year!
  • I have been a good girl and have not shopped in 2009 yet. But I have bought some new camera gear so I guess that kinda cancels itself out. You can argue that camera gear is an investment but I think Louis Vuitton handbags are as well =). Uh-oh now I’m on the www.eluxury.com website looking at LV handbags. Help!
  • I knew I wasn’t meant to be a lawyer. I could not even convince my kooky-I-love-Jonathan-forever sister to go on the NKOTB cruise with me. Yes NKOTB trapped on a boat with me!!! She said something about asking her husband! I said, you mean Jonathan?!
  • You would think with it not being wedding season right now I would have all this time to relax, catch up on LOST (I’m like 3 seasons behind), organize my room, dance around the house to Lady Gaga and everything else I have put off in the last 5 months, but there has been oodles of KLP goodness to do round here. Stay tuned to the blog because I have an exciting announcement coming next week! Sorry mom – it has nothing to do with the “Single Ladies” Beyonce song.

“america the beautiful”

All political beliefs aside, today is truly a historic day for America.  I am proud to be a part of history and most certainly ready for change.

What a great and symbolic photo! I wish I was there to take it myself! Minus the freezing temperatures!

mission impossible

January 5, 2009

“heartless”

Ok so my New Years Vegas mission to meet Donnie of NKOTB was an utter failure. How could a 7 feet tall bodyguard prevent a tiny lil’ Asian girl from meeting from her future ex-husband? As Kanye would say, how could he be so heartless?! I guess my plan to make Joey jealous by marrying Donnie isn’t going to work after all. Time for plan B.

So this is as close as I got to Donnie =(

Here he looking sharp with Danny!

Nevertheless, I had a great time ringing in the new year in Vegas with my friends and now back to take on 2009!

I have a great feeling it’s going to be a great year!!! So stay tuned ya hear? =)
