a very special proposal!

August 2, 2010

“truly madly deeply”

Happy Monday everyone! I wanted to start the week off with a very sweet story of my two very good friends. Linda + Vu recently got engaged and their proposal video is something I just had to share. Vu went all out in surprising Linda (and everyone else) with the grandest of proposals. Before you watch the video, here’s a little background on the amazing story! Vu picked up videography as a hobby earlier this year so he managed to capture it all on video without Linda being suspicious at all! Since he was young (or could remember), Vu wanted to propose to his future wife on top of a mountain. Finally after 9 years together (what were you waiting for Vu?!), he decided to propose on the day of the summer solstice this year a.k.a. the longest day of the year as a representation of the long life they have ahead together. So he told Linda that they were taking a trip to Yosemite with his family for fun. He had his wonderful family help document the whole thing and since he has been making videos lately, Linda had no idea what was going on until the big moment actually happened. This video will make you want to fall in love and hire a videographer or a very good photographer..*ahem, ahem* :) for your proposal. I didn’t admit this to them, but the video actually made me shed a tear or two. I have known these two for nearly 10 years now and I am so very happy to be a part of this special time for them. And I can’t wait to shoot their engagement session later this year! Here’s just a lil’ peek into their happy times. More happiness to follow!

“airplanes”

I’ve been dying to post these pics from my recent trip to New Zealand!!!! This was an extra special engagement session for me not only because I got to travel to such a cool destination, but also because I was documenting the trip for a very special friend of mine. I have known Jackie for about 9 years now and through the years, we have lived, laughed, cried and danced together :) . We have shared many life experiences together and I am so happy that she finally found her H.A.L.F. in Corey :) . After Corey proposed, we talked about doing a destination engagement session, but somewhere relatively close. So where did we end up?! Only 6,500 miles from Los Angeles duh. This you-can’t-pass-up-deal surfaced for New Zealand, we trade a few text messages and hours later we booked our tickets for a 4 day trip! Did I mention we booked our tickets only two weeks prior to our departure date?! Yes this was very spontaneous, but ended up being very worthwhile, as you can see from the pics below :) . We flew a total of 26 hours to spend about 72 hours in New Zealand. Even the customs people thought we were crazy. Another talented photographer, Jason Huang of Table 4 Weddings and one of his couples joined in on the spontaneity and the six of us were off to hopefully take some nice photos and more importantly find some sheep!!!!

We stayed in Auckland and spent all of our time in Northern New Zealand. If you ever plan to go to New Zealand, I would suggest going for more than 4 days so you can travel to the Southern region where I hear it is just breathtaking (the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed there). I have to say though Northern New Zealand did not disappoint. And we were lucky because although it was the start of their winter, it was not that cold (maybe by Los Angeles standards it was) and hardly rained.

Our plan to maximize our 72 hours in New Zealand was to sight-see and do our photo shoots at the same time. The first stop was Brick Bay Winery where I found what I was looking for – SHEEEEEP!!!! I was probably the only one excited. I REALLY wanted to do a pose with the sheep but as we would get closer to them, they would run away. I think it was because I was wearing my boots with the fur, my UGGs :( . I tried to apologize to them but they weren’t having any of it. So enough of my rambling and let me introduce you to the happy couple and some of my favorite sights in New Zealand :) :

And because people say when I travel, I never have any pics of myself (there’s usually no one to take it). Here’s a lil’ one of me and somebody :) .

On our second day, we spent the morning in Auckland and a beautiful day it was. I just love the light and feel of these next few photographs:

We then ventured to Piha Beach for more coastal scenery. Piha Beach is also known for their black sand. Everything was just stunning!

And just when we were about to wrap up the shoot, the light turned absolutely golden and delicious. The next several photos reminded us of how special it was to be shooting in such a unique place! So breathtaking! I was in photog heaven.

While searching for an engagement dress, Jackie actually found her wedding dress and brought it along to New Zealand (Ok I kinda made her)! But, you are going to have to wait for pics in her wedding dress until after the wedding. Here are some sneak peeks though and if you win if can tell me the designer of this dress from these photos!

All of the food in New Zealand was very fresh and organic. Had the best fish n’ chips ever while I was there:

And here we all are! Yes we are tourists lol and no I don’t know who took this pic. I think it was the ice cream man. Who needs beautiful scenery when you got a nice big picture frame lol.

“california gurl (and boy)”

Mui + Huy traveled from Sacramento to shoot their engagement session with yours truly. They love the beach so it was only fitting that we spent a gorgeous Friday afternoon there. It was the first time we met (they booked me via email :) ) and we hit it off right away! I think engagement sessions are such a wonderful way for me to get to know my clients and vice versa. Plus it’s a great chance for my couples to get comfortable with the camera, not that Mui + Huy needed it all! :) . Thanks to Mui + Huy for coming to sunny Socal to visit! See you in Sacramento for the big day!

“your love is my drug”

It’s almost not fair that two people like Diane + Rudy can be so good looking and so in love. Some people just have it all, don’t they? They certainly spiced things up at the Mission San Juan Capistrano and I definitely could not get enough of this beautiful couple. Their beauty and chemistry were undeniable. It was like watching a very pretty/hot love story unfold before my lens. I am soooo ready for their wedding next week! I have a feeling it’s going to be even hotter!

“i want candy”

Meet Candy, Eugene and the adorable Cola (like me, Eugene loves to drink Coca-Cola). One word to describe these three: FIERCE. I mean, who shows up in a wilderness park rocking killer heels?! A girl by the name of Candy.

They made these super cute chalkboards to use for their save the dates. I am super excited for their wedding in December!

Ok we see who the real star of this shoot and the baby in the family is:

Some alone time… (I was holding the doggie. During this shoot I learned that I could take a photo and walk a dog at the same time. Yes, I am that talented.)

I told you: F-I-E-R-C-E. Talk about modeling from your head to your toes. Even Cola is doing the “look away” pose.

My favorite set of the day. Notice how I make them do all the climbing and just stand at the bottom? I’m really good at directing. :)

Hours later, Candy was still strutting her stuff… She made me feel bad for feeling tired in my flats!

After the park, we headed to the stunning light fixtures at the LACMA. What a way to end the day.

“hey, soul sister”

Myling + Yem were set up on a blind date by their brothers (not the same brothers…well you know what I mean!). A spring roll later (or maybe two) at Brodard Restaurant (my Viet people know how yummy those rolls are) and the rest is history and of course, here for you to see :) .

This is one sexy, stylish and smart couple. And when they weren’t kissing, they kept me laughing during shoot. I think they have been stalking my blog (who doesn’t?!), because they knew the #1 way to my heart: good food. We continued the laughs over the most.delicious.burgers.ever. at Father’s Office after the shoot. As I took every savory bite of the burger, I kept telling myself how lucky I am to share such good times with good people and never really feel like it’s work…

I am super excited for their wedding in just 10 days!!!!!

Our first stop was the famous Bradbury Building in downtown Los Angeles, which is also the the location of one of my all time favorite engagement sessions. It has been 2 years since I last shot here so I was happy when Myling + Yem requested this location. Even though we couldn’t get full access to the building, I think we made the most of this architectural gem:

And after a quick ice cream break (wasn’t my idea this time but I didn’t complain either :) ), we headed back to the non-dark side and quick wardrobe re-change for some gorgeous rooftop photos:

You don’t want to see the behind-the-scene pics of how I captured this photo…or do you??? All I remember Yem saying was “I didn’t sign a contract for a threesome…”….hmmm…

This last picture in the bottom right was one of my favorites of the day. For the first time, I actually blushed while taking a photo.
