Yes folks, I will be out of the office until March 10, 2010 and will kindly respond to all messages upon my return.  I will be spending the next few days at the annual  Wedding Portraits & Photographers International (WPPI) Convention & Trade Show in Las Vegas.  I will be learning, networking, spending and hopefully making some money at the same time :) .  Yes, the things I must do for my job!!!!  If you are going, be sure to message me on twitter to meet up!  I will be lil’ Asian girl with braces and too many bags of things I bought from the tradeshow.

Check back to the blog next week because there are TONS of blog goodiness on the way.  Here’s a sneak peek of just SOME of the MANY things to come:

“one sweet day”
Recently I introduced you to a new, recurring feature on my blog – “ my inspirations“, which will center around the everyday beauties that inspire my work, life, and hopefully love :) . This week I would like to bring to you another new, soon-to-be recurring feature: “my favorite things”. No I am not Oprah (I wish!), but I am a very passionate person and I make it a priority to enjoy all the things I am passionate about :) . I try to not take anything for granted, but at the same time, work hard for all the things I still want. So this new feature will share all the things that make me smile, dance and aspire for more. If that doesn’t interest you, then just check back for pictures of food. I guarantee you there will be a lot of foodie related posts. :)

Today is of course Valentine’s Day and what better way to celebrate than with something (or someone) sweet?! And what better sweetness to have than red velvet cupcakes from Sprinkles! I think I especially liked them because they came with cute, lil’ hearts on top :) .

Hoping you are spending the day with the ones you love!!!!  XOXO

“good life”

In keeping up with blogging more this year, I thought I’d keep all of y’all updated with lil’ tibits of lil’ me and my lil’ life :) . If you know me, you know I love to EAT.  Combine good food with good friends and that’s my idea of a perfect night.  A couple of friends with very talented culinary skills came over this past weekend and treated us to a truly gourmet dinner.  I felt so blessed and stuffed that night :) .  Yes life is pretty darn good.

vietnam: the finale

January 27, 2010

“what a wonderful world”

I know, I’ve been a bad blogger lately. There goes 2010 resolution #8,998. But, have no fear, the holiday food coma has worn off, all the suitcases have been unpacked, the skies are sunny again and life for KLP seems to finally be back to some kind of order, well at least the KLP kind.

Sadly this is the last of my photo posts from my amazing trip to Vietnam last December. I can’t believe it’s been a month since I returned. *Sigh*. I would definitely go again in a heartbeat.

The final part of my Vietnam trip included a visit to Vietnam’s central region where my friend Neha and I visited the central cities of Hue and Hoi An. We then traveled south and met up with my sister and her husband in the beautiful beach city of Nha Trang. I love how Vietnam has so many different regions, each unique in their own way. If you asked me which is my favorite city in Vietnam, I don’t think I would not be able to answer your question! You should just go visit them all :) .

I have received a lot of positive feedback on my photos from Part 1 and Part 2. I feel fortunate that I can share with everyone my wonderful experiences :) . Please keep in mind that if you are planning a big trip and want to spend less time taking pics, but want some pretty good pics at the same time, I am available and happy to take that load off for you :) . I am so lil’ you won’t even notice I’m there :) . In addition to my photography skills, I would also bring some of my other travel expertise to the table such as reading maps, finding good eats, updating my facebook status and working on my tan. Things I’m not quite as good at: saving your life in the ocean or other bodies of water, putting your luggage in the overhead compartment, making normal faces in jumping shots and not being tempted to eat everything I can.

Ok on with the photos!

Here are some pictures from the central city of Hue. Hue use to be an Imperial City so there were a lot of interesting sights to see. We got pretty lucky on our trip – it only rained 2 out of the 18 days on our trip. The only 2 days happen to be in Hue and Hoi An. Unfortunately though that meant I wasn’t able to take as many photos during these 2 days.

Amazing, isn’t it?!

Um no my camera was not upside down.

After Hue, we took a bus, yes a bus on a 4 hour trek to Hoi An. We got a little scared when the bus driver parked in the middle of the road, got out and started banging on the wheels. At that point, I wondered if I could make a living as a wedding photographer in Central Vietnam. When we finally got to Hoi An though, I was delighted by the charming streets of Hoi An and all of the shopping and tailor shops that made Hoi An so unique.

After two rainy days, we were ready to leave and then took a flight to the beach city of Nha Trang. I took a total of 9 flights during my entire Vietnam-Cambodia trip. Some of them were about an hour long so they weren’t too bad. We saved Nha Trang for the end of our trip so we could wind down and just do nothing (I’m very good at that by the way) :) . We also decided to splurge and stay at the Evason Ana Mandera Resort & Spa in Nha Trang. It was super luxurious and private. We loved it and probably could have spent the entire 18 days here, doing nothing :) . Sigh…just looking at these pics makes me want to take another vacation soon.

Our beach bungalow:

This is where I spent 90% of the 3 days in Nha Trang. The other 10% was spent at the spa :) .

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

It was a little cloudy while we were in Nha Trang (the best time to go is during the summer months), but I did not mind waking up to this everyday:

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

You know no KLP beach vacation would not be complete without a leg shot:

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

If you are thinking the words “must be nice” in your head, it was :) .

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

And of course we had to do a final jumping shot on our vaca. Neha is gonna kill me for posting this one, but what are friends for?! It’s actually my fault, I jumped early of course :) .

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

A sorta normal one? Well at least Neha looks normal. My Michael Jordan impression didn’t work so well. And there’s that hat from Cambodia…

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

The other side of our resort…which we didn’t really venture to. It was hard to leave our beach chair when they are serving you fresh fruit and yogurt :) .

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

No that is not the Hollywood sign in the distance. It is Vin Pearl Resort. I contemplated photoshopping the sign out of this photo.

Yes silliness runs in the Phams:

My brother-in-law Chris aka the Birdman. He’s gonna kill me for posting this hahaha. He learned well from KLP – anything to get the shot!!! :)

And that is all folks. Don’t be sad. I have a lot of more exciting trips planned for this year and I’ll be sure to share them all! :)

goodbye 2009, hello 2010

“one time”

On this last day of 2009, I just wanted to take the time to say a great big THANK YOU to all of my incredible family, friends & clients who have supported me this year and every year. It has been a huge year of change for me and I am SO grateful for all of your love & support. I really can’t imagine being who and where I am today without you.

As each year ends and a new one begins, I always take some time to reflect on the year that has passed and prepare for the year that awaits. I was trying to come up with some words of cheesiness and inspiration like I usually do :) , but instead I found this quote that I think perfectly represents my outlook on life. I see each day as an opportunity to live a lil’ better and love a whole lot more :) . I hope that this too will provide some inspiration in your new year.

Dream what you want to dream;
go where you want to go;
be what you want to be,
because you have only one life and one
chance to do all the things you want to do.

And so I leave you will a Poladroid collage of some of the most memorable moments of 2009 with some of the people and places that made this year extra special. Most of these photos were actually taken by others or simply through my iPhone (I apologize if they are not up to par with typical Kim Le Photography :) ). I think these photos really reflect what a crazy and wonderful year it has been for me and that despite whatever challenges might have come my way, I have been blessed to be surrounded by so many fabulous people and experienced so many amazing moments. And I’m sorry if you didn’t make the cut – there’s always next year! :) I have to say my favorite of all the photos below is my super fly mommy rockin’ the yellow stunna shades below – see last row, 2nd photo to the right. Now you know where I get my swagger from! LOL.

2009 collage by kim le photography

Thank you and I look forward to you joining me in 2010!!!! I am super excited about the endless opportunities that await! I have a feeling – actually I KNOW it’s going to be a great year!!!

vietnam: part 2

December 29, 2009

“what a wonderful world”

Here is part 2 of my amazing trip to the motherland. After Cambodia, we flew to the Northern part of Vietnam to visit the country’s capital of Hanoi and the scenic beauty of Halong Bay. I feel very, very blessed to have the opportunity to see and experience so many places.

Hanoi is Vietnam’s second largest city and is just as bustling at Saigon. However, Hanoi has its own unique charm about it. At the center of the city is a beautiful lake called Hoan Kiem Lake. We stayed near here and spent most of our time wandering around and taking in the beautiful sights of the city.

A popular form of entertainment in Hanoi is catching a show at the Water Puppet Theater. Here are some of the water puppets:

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

Hanoi had a lot of great places to eat, but one of my favorites was a charming restaurant called KOTO which stands for “Know One, Teach One”. Not only is it a place with delicious food, but I just love the message behind it. KOTO is a not-for-profit restaurant and vocational training program that is changing the lives of street and disadvantaged youth in Vietnam.

Yes I was thirsty.

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

After a couple of nice days in Hanoi, we took a 4 hour bus ride to Halong City. From there, we boarded our junk boat to set sail overnight to Halong Bay:

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

This is our cute lil’ room.

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

Ok let me just say Halong Bay is one of the most BREATHTAKING places I have every been to in my life. Halong Bay is UNESCO World Heritage site and features thousands of limestone isles in various sizes and shapes. As good as a photographer as I am :) , I don’t think my photos even did this place justice. The bay was simply beautiful, with an incredible calmness and peacefulness about it. I spent most of my time sitting a top of the junk boat, wondering how I became so fortunate to experience such a magnificent place. It’s times like these that I feel so blessed and so in love with life. I hope one day you will experience this sensation as well.

Halong Bay has various caves and one of the caves was visited was the amazing “Surprise Cave”:

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

It was so unbelievably large and grand inside:

Stunning, isn’t it?!

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

Now this is why I came to Halong Bay. This scene I witnessed and captured here makes the 16 hour flight and 4 hour bus ride to Halong Bay all worth it and more. We caught the beauty of the bay right before sunset and it was so moving to me. This is probably my most favorite photo of the entire trip:

a phamily christmas

December 25, 2009

“we wish you a merry christmas”

So what does a Phamily Christmas consist of???? Well there’s lots of Phams, lots of gifts, lots of laughs and of course lots of food. Put those together and you got yourself a very jolly Phamily. We always do our holiday dinner on Christmas Eve because us Phams have no patience…for anything. My sister and her husband always manage to whip up the most delicious meal ever and this year was no exception. We stuffed ourselves with tons of yumminess including prime rib, creamed corn, potatoes au gratin, and my sister’s amazing peanut butter dessert. Mere seconds after we took our last peanut buttery bite, we tore our gifts apart because again us Phams cannot wait…for anything. And just like every year before, we looked at each other at 10pm on Christmas Eve and wondered where Christmas went?! And there you have it, another incredibly Phamtastic Phamily Christmas (Eve) :) . Hope yours was just as lovely!

“what a wonderful world”

The adventures of Lil’ Kim continues!  On the next leg of our trip, my sister and her hubby went on a (belated) honeymoon to Thailand and Neha and I ventured to Siem Reap, Cambodia to see the amazing temples.  The most famous temple there is Angkor Wat, which was built for the king in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. The temple is the epitome of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the prime attraction for visitors to Cambodia. Angkor Wat was AMAZING to say the least. The significance in size, history and culture was incredible. I felt like I was in another world – this is a definite must see if you ever go to Southeast Asia.

How else do we travel in Vietnam, but with Vietnam Airlines!

cambodia by kim le photography

On a very hot day in Siem Reap, armed with our tour guide and lots of bug spray, we headed to a smaller temple first called the Bayon Temple.

Did someone say monkeys?!!!!

I was SO sad. I forgot my favorite Jason Mraz hat (you know the one I wore from my birthday shoot) on the airplane and had to buy this other one for $2 in Cambodia. Sigh…

I don’t know why but I felt like Indiana Jones here.

The next temple we visited was the Ta Prohm temple, which is also where the movie “Tomb Raider” was filmed. The temple is famous for these elaborate trees:

And finally we made our way to the temple of all temples, Angkor Wat! Can I get a “wat up?!” Ok I’ll stop now.

I like to call this “Harold & Kumar Escape from Angkor Wat” :) And WHY must I have the most ridiculous faces in my jumping photos?!

vietnam: part 1

December 17, 2009

“what a wonderful world”

Welcome to the adventures of Lil’ Kim :) . Remember I’m just a lil’ girl with a big camera hoping to have some pretty huge life experiences :) .  I travel as much as possible because I think there are soooo many fascinating places to see and experience out there. I just LOVE visiting new places – admiring the architecture, learning the history, engaging in the customs and traditions of the people and most definitely enjoying all of the local eats.  Sometimes I even find myself planning my trip around where I am going to eat…lol. A few weeks ago, I went to Vietnam for the first time and I can say it was definitely one of the best trips I have ever been on.  I was kind of nervous at first because I had never been there before – my family had fled Vietnam in 1980 and I was born shortly after they arrived in the United States.  I only knew Vietnam from my parents’ stories and what I read in my history classes.  But, it didn’t take me long to feel very comfortable with my people, the culture and feel right at home. Vietnam has definitely advanced from when my parents left and it’s interesting to see how the country grows and blends technology & tradition. I also found myself falling in love with the lifestyle there.  Even in some of Vietnam’s biggest cities, everything seemed so much slower and easier.  I also did not expect to communicate so easily with the locals.  I don’t consider myself that fluent in Vietnamese, but all the locals were surprised that I had been born in the states because I spoke Vietnamese so well :) .  I guess you can go to a new place and learn a lot about yourself :) .

I went on this 18 day trip with my sister, her husband and one of my good friends.  I have family & friends who live in Vietnam so I was fortunate to also spend some time with them.  I was sad that I missed some of my favorite holidays – Thanksgiving & Black Friday, but I wouldn’t trade any of my recent experiences for anything. In 18 days, we ended up visiting a total of 6 cities in Vietnam and 1 city in Cambodia.  I think I took around 2000 photographs on the trip.  There were just so many unique parts of Vietnam and soooo many things that inspired me as an artist and a person.  Due to the plethora of photos, I will be blogging the trip in parts according to areas I visited.  So you will definitely have to revisit the blog often to see all of the awesomeness :)

Vietnam has very many different parts of the country. Our first stop was the largest city in Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City or as most people call it Saigon.  I felt the most at home in Saigon because it had a great metropolitan area.  It is the most populated area in Vietnam – almost every street seemed busy and bustling with people and activity.

Good morning Vietnam!

Saigon Vietnam by kim le photography

The streets were busy like this everywhere. Vietnam is a growing country – it is the 13th most populated country in the world with a population of over 86 million! Most people in Saigon own a motorbike and drive like I’ve never seen in my life. I like to call it organized chaos. I am not even kidding! I thought there was going to be an accident every 5 seconds and was incredibly surprised I did not see a single one while I was there. Pedestrian right of way also does not exist in Vietnam. The best thing to do is just to keep walking. It took me about 15 minutes to cross the street the first day and on the 18th day in Vietnam, I found myself walking like a Saigon pro :) .

We visited my wonderful family who lived near Saigon. It was so heartwarming to see my aunt again, my uncle visiting from Australia, and lots of lovely cousins whom I have never met before. They were so sweet and funny like the rest of my family – I felt like I had known them my whole life. I guess that’s how family makes you feel right??? ! Here I am with one of my cute lil’ cousins – his twin sister is sleeping on the floor (see bottom right).

My friend Neha and I took a day trip from Saigon to the Mekong Delta, which is a region in southwestern Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries. Life in the Mekong Delta revolves much around the river, and many of the villages are often accessible by rivers and canals rather than by road. The people in the Mekong Delta are mostly farmers and fisherman who work extremely hard for everyday living. Our tour guide told us that most older folks work all day not to afford the cost of living which is very little, but to save their earnings so their children can receive an education. Vietnam is a developing country, and many Vietnamese parents cannot afford for their children to attend schools.
